Love is Vodka: A Shot Ain’t Enough by Amit Shankar

Fiction and love have a romance, which is as old as when the books came in to existence for entertainment or that is what I think. Love is always been there existentially giving us hope of something better and bigger that is coming our way, whether it is a soul mate or a something we love. Love makes the world go round and always come back to the basics.

There is passion in love, jealousy, hatred, care, kindness and what not. Love has everything. So when I review a book that is basically a love story of modern age, I look for all of these emotions in the book. I look for a worthwhile love story which if not makes me cry but at least makes me yearns for a love story like that.

Love is Vodka by Amit Shankar is a love story of a confused teenage girl Moon. The interesting part of her past is that she is a love child and has been solely brought up by her mother. She stumbles through her life till her mother decides that she needs to bring some order and gets her an internship in an ad agency.

This is where the story takes off, but somehow the character of Moon doesn’t. Her portrayal and the way her character is written is praise-worthy but then also it doesn’t really hit or make you like her. You just keep on going from one boyfriend to another, one fight with the mother to another fight.

Saying that, it is a chick-lit and there is certain humor and aspect of teenage life that is bang on like the Facebook obsession and the “likes” factor.  It is one of the most relatable part if you a teen or are just about to enter adulthood. The only problem with the story is that it is predictable and with Amit Shankar, you kind of feel like this is not what the author does.

Nonetheless Love is Vodka is one novel whose one shot might not make you high but will make you heady. Read for Amit Shankar and his portrayal of Moon and also, the character of Devil.
